How to mix your 808’s and Kicks for a great mix

How to mix your 808’s and Kicks

Learning to mix your 808’s and kick drums together can be a task on it’s own but here is a trick I used on hundreds of records. This tip can be used in any DAW such as Protools, Cubase, Logic, Studio One, and more. Mastering this technique is all about learning the frequencies of the 808 and kick and choosing which one you want to site on top. The main Eq Plugin I use for this technique is the Fab Filter Pro-Q because it has an analyzer and shows what frequencies are being used. Being able to see the frequencies makes it much easier to dial the correct settings for a tighter response.mixing 808's Roland Tr-808

Lets Jump right in!

Start by adding your eq plugin on the insert of the kick and 808 and turn on the analyzer to see what frequencies are being used. What makes this tip helpful is creating space for each sound to live on it’s own. I start by using a low cut on the kick drum to cut out the information that’s not being used and cut the frequencies that the 808 is using. The 808 usually occupy the space of 80hz and lower so I cut that from the kick and it cleans it right up. After that I analyze the 808 and cut out all frequencies that the kick is using so that it has it’s own space.

After that I blend the two tracks to my liking and the low end sounds and feels a lot cleaner. Most of the time taking away unused frequencies first will result in a better mix than adding them to hear more of a certain sounds.

I hope this tip helps and don’t forget to subscribe to my youtube channel for more tips and tutorials.
