How I Made This Bryson Tiller Type Beat
Adding Pad sound in Maschine using Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol
While scrolling through a few sounds in Maschine, I came across this really melodic pad sound that reminded me of some of the sounds used in Bryson Tiller’s beats. I then started to just play little melodies on the keyboard until I found the right groove that I wanted. The pad sound was so catchy that I had to sit for a minute to see what else was needed to fill the track out.
With R&B Beats, it’s all about melody and the melody must be strong and memorable. After I sat and got the feel for the chords I used I then added the 808 bass the custom 808 bass sound I created from scratch. Some stock sounds are good but I prefer to create my own sounds that brings a unique feel to my beats and production. I then layered the bell sound over the pads to add some excitement and change to create a build up.
Now For The Best Part, The Drum Sounds

When I choose my drum sounds I select them based on the elements that I have in the beat and if I’m building on top of an instrument. On this RNB style beat I used a tight kick drum with a little punch to it that I sampled from my MPC 3000. The snare is a filtered snare for the first section of the verse and for the second part I used an original TR-808 snare and hihat. The drum pattern was simple so the pad sound can stand out. The rhythm of the hihat was important to create that cutting edge sound that music has today. All of my drums are either sampled from the E-mu-SP1200 or the Akai MPC3000.
Bringing in the guitar
After getting all those parts sequenced and mixed, a friend by the name of Patrick dropped by with his guitar for a session. I decided to have him add a little flavor on the track with some distorted guitar and it brought a different vibe to the beat. Inside the intro section, we used a simple 4 bar loop and a solo during the bridge.

I exported the entire track into Cubase Pro 8 to mix and master it using Waves and FabFilter Plugins. I like the editing features in Cubase so I all my drops and breaks inside the program.
